Description


The Senior Project Manager will be responsible for initiating, directing, coordinating, controlling, and managing Front-End Loading (FEL) studies (i.e., Scoping, Pre-Feasibility, and Feasibility) for Cliffs’ capital projects. They will develop budgets, schedules, and project plans; assemble and direct multi-discipline project teams using resources from Cliffs operating facilities as well as related corporate functions (e.g., environmental, safety, legal, risk management, procurement, etc.); engage and manage outside design and engineering services; and, interface with internal Cliffs stakeholders.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Consistently demonstrate and act in accordance with Cliffs’ Core Values
  • Follow the general guidance set forth in the Cliffs’ Capital Investment System (CIS)
  • Define project scopes, goals, and deliverables that support business objectives in collaboration with project steering committees and other stakeholders
  • Identify project resources and establish staffing requirements for each project phase
  • Ensure overall project risks are identified, managed, and mitigated
  • Ensure operations support is maintained throughout the project life cycle
  • Prepare bid proposals, requirements documents, and other pertinent materials to support project efforts
  • Prepare progress reports on project status and project outcomes
  • Manage and coordinate project activities to provide the technical support required to advance the business unit goals
  • Work with project stakeholders and team members to ensure the projects completed meet or exceed requirements
  • Complete the economic analysis and authorization requests necessary to solicit and secure project approvals
  • Identify, select, and evaluate consultants and contractors
  • Ensure conformance with Cliffs’ requirements for safety, risk, environmental, ethics, accountability, and installation requirements
  • Authorize, within spending authority, budgeted commitments and expenditures for the supply of goods and services
  • Create and manage projects controls to achieve on time and on budget projects
  • Measure and monitor the performance of project execution and determine all measures which may be required to handle any adverse trends in regards to safety, schedule and cost
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time

Education

  • BS degree in Engineering

Registrations

  • Professional Engineer license required
  • Project Management Professional certificate a plus

Experience

  • At least 15 to 20 years of demonstrated experience completing FEL studies, permitting studies (e.g., EIS, NPDES) and projects, preferably in a mining or heavy industry environment
  • Experience assembling and managing highly functional project teams, including engineers, consultants, and contractors
  • Experience creating and adhering to work scopes, schedules, and budgets for larger scale (>$10M) projects
  • Demonstrated success in managing capital projects from initiation, through planning and permitting, design, and execution

Other

  • Candidate must be a self-starter and possesses the ability to direct and oversee multiple projects and assignments in a fast-paced business environment
  • Applicant must have the ability to manage other disciplines as part of a project team and complete projects on time and within budget
