Maintenance Welder

Description :

The Maintenance – Welder is responsible for performing various types of welding, brazing, and cutting on any type of metals using gas and electric welding equipment, requiring full craftsman skill.  This position works with and assists other Maintenance Technicians in the repair of fixed plant assets including unplanned and preventative maintenance activities.

Specific Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Perform craftsman-level welding using various types of gas and electric welding and burning equipment, cleaning tools, shields, safety equipment, welding fixtures, etc.
  • Perform work necessary to repair and install equipment such as cutting, welding, brazing, babbitting, fitting, aligning, riveting, threading, chipping, etc.
  • Plan, layout, fit, and weld materials using support tools such as work orders, standard jobs, blue prints, sketches, welding procedures, maintenance manuals, and other documents related to the Engineering specifications.
  • Safely and competently perform repairs on a wide variety of equipment, piping, structural and support steel, pumps, process fans, motors, hydraulic systems, compressors, ventilation fans, air receivers, conveyor installations, chutes, etc. both inside and out door applications in a 24/7 environment.
  • Be willing and interested in learning additional skills beyond traditional mechanic skills to become a cross-functional crafts-person.
  • Receive verbal and/or written instructions from Supervision in the form of work orders, permits to work, hot work, confined space, and isolation procedures to safely complete work, including paperwork and feedback to Supervision on execution of tasks.
  • Perform troubleshooting, identify and select and/or communicate to planning correct tools and materials for ad-hoc or unplanned maintenance activities.
  • Operates equipment for testing purposes. Analyzes mechanical failures and determines repairs.  
  • Safely perform basic rigging using slings, chain falls, and other common lifting devices.
  • Operates drill presses, threading machines, and cut-off saws as required. 
  • Operate trucks, forklifts, cranes, and elevated work platforms as required to facilitate work.  Works in shop or field as required. 
  • Inspects and keeps tools and work area in clean and orderly condition. 
  • Prepares and provides reports as required.

Education/Experience Requirements


  • Associates Degree or 2-year technical school degree/certification or completion of an apprenticeship program.  May consider equivalent experience.


  • Journeyman card, certification and/or 5+ years of skilled trades mechanical maintenance work experience in a manufacturing or heavy industrial environment
  • Welding and hot work experience on piping and pumping systems operating hazardous/flammable gases or hydrocarbons
  • Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) experience; Ellipse preferred
  • Microsoft Office experience (Excel, Word, etc.)
  • Understanding of shop mathematics with the use of drawings, specifications, charts, tables, and precision measuring instruments
  • Strong mechanical aptitude preferably with experience in (pipe materials, wear liner materials, specifications, fittings, seals, water piping/pumping systems, compressible fluid piping/pumping systems, welding, conveying equipment, gearing/bearings/power transmission, rigging/iron working, tolerances, use of power/hydraulic tools, high temperature refractory clipping and refractory
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision and effectively manage multiple/changing priorities


  • Ability to work effectively with torches, cutters, staplers, hand/pneumatic tools and hand tools (hammers, torque wrench, crow bars, etc.)
  • Ability to read and understand mechanical drawing sets including general arrangements, exploded views, bill or materials (BOM), welding procedures, material and piping specifications
  • Ability to interpret maintenance manuals
  • Ability to perform basic rigging
  • Effectively communicate both orally and through written text

Physical Demands:

  • Occasionally lifting up to 25lbs
  • Mobility required.  Must be able to handle stairs and long periods of work on your feet
  • Routinely exposed to plant environment including noise, dust, dirt and vibrations, extreme climate changes / changes in weather
  • Work at heights
  • Availability as needed to work on both a scheduled and call-out basis, and the ability to work at the assigned job site.
