The Instrumentation and Controls Engineer will provide electrical, instrumentation and controls engineering support to increase efficiency, quality, and productivity in the direct reduced iron processing operation.  This position will apply engineering skills and operational knowledge in the identification and resolution of technical problems during design, implementation, and testing phases. 

Specific Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Provide electrical process controls engineering and data integration services including developing project scope, planning, procuring, and the managing of engineering projects.
  • Work with all levels of Plant personnel to identify and assess equipment and process problems and define requirements to help address engineering problems and needs.
  • Manage engineering projects from conception to completion.
  • Provide a wide variety of engineering and data integration services from project specification through design, implementation, training and support.
  • Must possess knowledge of current controls practices, procedures standards, and equipment. Must be familiar with a variety of process control concepts.
  • Maintains proper controls documentation including cause and effect diagrams, controls narratives, and network drawings.
  • Supports a wide range of communications protocols, networks, and radio telemetry including Ethernet I/O, Device Level Rings, Ethernet Radios, Serial Radios, Modbus and OPC.
  • Assists with establishing Key Processing “Best Practices” to improve profitability, including: operating conditions, hardware change recommendations, monitoring process conditions, and unit performance reporting/comparison (benchmarking).
  • Direct and coordinate the work performed in the department by engineering consultants and contractors.
  • Direct and coordinate the work performed by operating employees as required for new equipment installations or testing to ensure conformity to engineering design and specifications.

Education/Experience Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Controls Engineering.
  • Master’s degree in Electrical or Controls Engineering preferred.


  • 5-7 years of plant-level experience in Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls Engineering with electrical control systems in the petrochemical, metals, or mineral processing industry;
  • Experience in building a new system from scratch is highly desirable;
  • A demonstrated track record of success in the development and implementation of machine and process control schemes;
  • Experience in maintenance and troubleshooting of advanced controls systems (DCS, PLC, LCI, VFD/Soft Start) - preferably Honeywell;
  • Understanding of one line diagrams, schematics, logic drawings, engineering documents, technical and reference materials required;
  • Understanding of PLC Programming including ladder logic, function block, and structured text;
  • Understanding of various networks and protocols;
  • Understanding of Industry Specific Standards such as NEC, API, and DOT standards;
  • Operations will be performed 7 days a week 24 hours a day; therefore, continuous support is required including rotational weekend on call support;
  • Strong report writing and verbal communication skills;
  • Excellent computer skills


  • Domestic as required
  • To Cleveland-based headquarters and Michigan / Minnesota-based operational sites, as required.
  • Up to 10% estimated, will vary as work load dictates.
