POSITION: SAFETY SUPPORT SPECIALIST (SALARIED EXEMPT – BAND B POSITION)

LOCATION: SAFETY DEPARTMENT

AREA: PLANT & MINE – BASED PRIMARILY OUT OF PLANT LOCATION

Northshore Mining Company, a subsidiary of Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., is a taconite mining and processing facility located in Northern Minnesota. The Mining facility is located in Babbitt, MN and the processing plant is located in Silver Bay, MN on the north shore of Lake Superior.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The primary function of this position is to provide operational and administrative support for the Safety department. This position will also interact directly with employees to provide guidance on safety policies, procedures, and equipment. This position will start primarily as Safety administrative related duties, worker’s compensation and learning MSHA regulations; and gradually take on increasing responsibilities in other Safety related areas, with the potential of moving into a Safety Representative position in the future. This position reports to the Area Manager – Safety and Loss Control.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to):

  • Responsible for administering Northshore Mining’s Worker’s Compensation program.This includes: entering claims, maintaining employee worker’s compensation files, working with medical providers and injured employees, and coordinating return to work programs. This also requires communication with Cliff’s claims management, various employees and managers, 3rd party worker’s compensation administrators, medical physicians and attorneys.

  • Develop a good understanding of the MSHA regulations and be available to participate in an active MSHA inspection when necessary.

  • Provide administrative support to the safety department staff at the plant and mine as required. This includes, but is not limited to: maintaining employee safety files, preparation and distribution of a weekly safety packet, tracking and entering MSHA training data, entering incident reports, keeping the safety intranet site updated, preparing statistical reports for NSM, corporate, and MSHA on a timely basis, etc.

  • Responsible for maintaining the MSHA training plan and producing a monthly safety training video for all employees.The videos will be a combination of external training media and internally produced video using Adobe video editing equipment.

  • Develop an understanding of industrial hygiene principles and equipment.Assist safety staff with sampling as necessary.

  • Perform respirator fit testing on new employees and other employees as required.Coordinate the annual health and wellness exams.

  • Maintain the confined space monitoring equipment and train employees on usage.This includes administering the contract with the outside vendor.

  • Maintain the NSM emergency response plan.Keep updated and distribute changes as necessary.

  • Maintain the site SDS database.

  • New hire orientation support – prepare safety information packets, prepare 5000-23 forms, engrave locks, distribute safety glasses forms, and participate in the training.

  • Maintain the site databases for vehicle passes, safety glasses, and security gate FOBS.

  • Coordinate the safety award program.This includes determining employee eligibility, preparation of departmental sign-up sheets, and distribution of the awards.

  • Other duties as assigned.

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required: Safety, Health, Industrial Hygiene or other related field is preferred.

  • Previous administrative experience in a fast paced, industrial environment is preferred.

  • Previous experience with MN Worker’s Compensation is preferred.

  • Communication Skills - Must have strong verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.Must have excellent communication skills and be able to interact and communicate with all levels within the organization.Must be self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.Must be willing to challenge the status quo, identify and pursue new ideas and opportunities to improve production, safety, add value and/or solve problems.

  • Computer Skills - Must be proficient with the use of personal computers (Excel, Word, Access, Adobe, and PowerPoint) and have the ability to learn and proficiently use various Cliffs/Northshore data systems tools.

  • Organizational Skills – Must have excellent organizational skills and be able to plan and coordinate multiple work tasks with a variety of employees, departments, vendors and outside contractors with regular interruptions.

  • Decision Making Skills – Must be able to think logically using factual data and structure ideas to positively influence others.Must make sound, timely decisions under conditions of uncertainty and risk.Must be able to multi-task and work well under stressful conditions.

  • People Skills – Must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to motivate, empower and delegate.Must be willing to support and promote Northshore team concepts and company policies fairly and consistently.Must be skilled in team solving techniques.

  • Attention to detail is critical.

  • High level of confidentiality is required.

  • Must be able to meet deadlines.

  • Must be a champion of safe production methods & ideals.Promotes continuous improvement.

  • Highly motivated, demonstrated positive attitude and excellent work ethic.
