Description


Purpose: Provides day-to-day operations supervision and develops operation goals and objectives that will achieve a safe, efficient and reliable transportation system.

  • Supervise and coordinate all train movements on the LS&I Railroad, including mine, yards and ore dock operations.

  • Supervises transportation employees which include training, assigning and directing work, appraising performance, resolving problems,issuing discipline and overseeing work performed within the railroad system.

  • Lead with a clear direction and goals and provide coaching and guidance to employees through regular monitoring of employee performance.

  • Apply collective bargaining agreement(s) and company policies when carrying out duties, including managing and coaching employees, conducting investigations, recommending corrective action and responding to grievances/complaints.

  • Monitor and enforce Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) compliance along with company, property, and departmental policies, rules, standards and collective bargaining agreements.

  • Work with local, county and state agencies on railroad issues to create and continue good relations.

  • Meetor exceedrequired number of efficiency tests on employees and enterthem into the SafeTrack system.

  • Interact and direct if necessary other departments involved with operations.

  • Plan, schedule and coordinate train crews on a daily basis to meet operation needs.

  • Coordinate movement of trains and interchanges over LS&I territory.

  • Participate in activities related to derailments and disruptions in service, while working with engineering and mechanical to determine cause and future prevention.

  • Participate in investigations when necessary.

  • Enforce safe work practices, procedures and policies.

  • Meet deadlines, interface with management.

  • Ensures compliance and application of company policies, i.e., applicable safety rules, scheduled agreements, FRA operation standards and governmental regulations.

  • Supports continuous improvement initiative.

  • Provide job briefings.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum of High School diploma/GED, 2 year degree preferred.

  • Minimum of 5 years in railroad operations with emphasis in transportation preferred.

  • Relevant work experience in similar working conditions or regulatory/safety environment, preferred.

  • Experience in supervising a unionized workforce, preferred.

  • Competent in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Ellipse preferred.

  • Collaborative and team-oriented, can motivate others to achieve set objectives and maintains positive interactions.

  • Self motivated with strong leadership skills - supervising, mentoring and coaching.

  • Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills.

  • Must be able to pass General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR) exam and remain qualified.

  • Valid drivers license and must be eligible to be insured under the LS&I vehicle insurance policy.

  • Supervisor experience required,in railroad operations preferred.

  • Strong ability to perform well under pressure and in stressful situations and circumstances.

  • Ability to understand train scheduling and Railroad Operating rules.

  • Must display logistical thinking, critical thinking and multitasking skills.

  • Ability to successfully collaborate in a team environment while prioritizing tasks and instructions.

  • Ability to work autonomously and adapt to changing situations.

  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.

  • Must have the ability to stay alert and prepared for unusual conditions or circumstances.

  • Demonstrate and encourage teamworkand high performance standards throughout the department and maintain positive interactions with others.

  • Administers the disciplinary action process when necessary.

  • Dedication to getting the job done while meeting established standards of quality andsafety.

  • Demonstrates a proven track record in troubleshooting and problem solving.

  • Knowledge of FRA standards and operational regulations, including general railroad safety rules, GCOR, air test requirements, train handling techniques and car movement operating.

  • Will be subject to CFR Part 219 Control of Alcohol and Drug Use.

  • Must practice safe work habits to prevent on the job accidents and injuries and makes the prevention of job accidents and injuries a priority.

  • Must utilize all protective equipment as assigned/required.

  • All positions require pre-employment background verification, physical and pre-employment drug/alcohol screening.

  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC): Federal authority requires LS&I employees, whose work requires unescorted access to secure areas of port facilities, to obtain a TWIC. A TWIC is a condition of employment for such positions and requires candidates to those positions to submit to a TSA security assessment (to include, but not limited to, providing: biographic information; identity documents; fingerprints; digital photograph). Work Conditions:

  • Irregular hours, including nights, weekends and holidays.

  • Combination of office work and working outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.

  • Lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Works safely and efficiently at various heights.

  • Respond to unexpected or emergency situations.

  • Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week in all weather conditions. You may be required to work various shifts, overtime, holidays and weekend.
