To provide leadership, direction and input for process engineering support across USIO concentrator and pellet plant operations.


  • Interacts with metallurgists, metallurgical technicians, laboratory staff, and operations personnel.

  • Plans and implements the gathering of data from various sources to support and drive business and operational performance changes.

  • Optimizes operational parameters through troubleshooting, data collection, and analysis

  • Maintains knowledge of and applies industry standards, best practices, and technology developments.

Health, Safety, Environment & Community

  • Learns, understands, promotes and trains others in Cleveland-Cliffs health, safety and environment policies and procedures.

  • Work with the Safety Team in identifying and mitigating safety risk.Conduct safety audits, inspections, observations, and prepare action plans to close unnecessary gaps.

  • Work with the Environmental team in identifying and mitigating environmental risks, conducting environmental audits, inspections, observations, and preparing action plans to close unnecessary gaps.

  • Assists supervisors as needed in holding employees accountable for performing work in a safe, environmentally responsible and productive manner that meets or exceeds all company rules, as well as all federal, state and local laws and regulations.

  • Immediately investigate and report all accidents and incidents in accordance with Michigan Operations safety policy.

  • Promote and encourage teamwork and high performance standards throughout the operation.

  • Complies with individual site and local environmental policies, procedures and laws.

  • Include health and environmental considerations in the planning and execution of all work.

  • If needed, actively participate in MSHA and other regulatory body inspections.

  • Promote Cleveland-Cliffs within the wider community.

  • Actively participate in Safety Interactions.

    • Beneficiation (comminution, classification, separation, etc.)

    • Plant and laboratory unit operations

    • Metallurgical and mass balances

    • Flowsheet development

    • Process control

    • Financial analysis

    • Basic mineralogy

  • Skills:
    • Problem solving

    • Sampling and data analysis

    • Technical writing and communications

    • Self-motivated

Education & Experience

  • Minimum: Bachelor's Degree in Metallurgical, Mineral Processing, or Chemical Engineering
  • Experience at a mineral processing facility preferred.


  • Acquires and applies knowledge, skills and experience to accomplish results
  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of policies and procedures of operation; complies with and applies policies and procedures appropriately. Keeps current with and effectively applies new work methods, skills and technologies to complete work.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook.
  • Effective communication skills both oral & written.

  • Effective problem solving skills.
  • Sound knowledge of safety and environmental regulations

  • Current valid driver’s license

Physical Demands

  • The employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, kneel, crouch, reach, handle and work on elevated platforms in an industrial setting with close proximity to moving and mechanical parts.
  • Mobility required.
  • Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Fast paced mentally demanding work environment.
  • Exposed to fumes, noise, dust, dirt and vibrations and extreme temperatures.
