Cliffs is looking for an experienced, motivated, career minded individual to fill our new Benefit and Leave Specialist position in our Ishpeming, MI office. Our Benefit and Leave Specialist will play a critical role, being the subject matter expert in all things benefits related for Cliffs Michigan Operations. The ideal candidate must have Benefit and Leave Administration experience. In this role, you will help our employees navigate the confusing world of benefits and insurance. You will assist individuals with coverage, help them obtain information and educate them and their families with issues regarding benefits. The Benefit & Leave Specialist is responsible for leading the day-to-day activities of the Company's leave of absence, workers' compensation, and medical benefits. In addition, this position providesthe lead support as needed for the Company's retirement programs.This position is primarily located out of the Tilden Mine, but regular travel between properties is required, as well as occasional travel to other Cliffs mine sites and other associated business travel.

  • Act as the primary contact for leave of absence, workers' compensation, and employee benefit inquiries and supports and participates in new hire education/on-boarding.

  • Serve as a resource for management and an advocate for employees in effectively and efficiently resolving employee benefit complaints and building and maintaining professional, respectful and productive relationships.

  • Sorts and prioritizes inquires, resolving those that are minor in nature and escalating more complex issues to the Corporate Benefits Group for handling.

  • FMLA and other Leaves of Absence administration.

  • Maintain the filing system for leaves and employee benefits.

  • Maintain benefit system and all vendor systems by processing benefit enrollments, status changes and terminations.

  • Liaison with insurance carriers, third party administrators, etc. in the administration of benefits and claims issues.

  • Monitors employee status throughout the duration of the leave.

  • Maintain leave and workers' compensation data in the system of record.

  • Perform administrative tasks related to the Company's benefit programs such as preparing benefit packets and correspondence/mailings, as well as other HR administrative tasks.

  • Ensure compliance with bargaining agreements, applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations in all areas of responsibility.

  • Assist with plan interpretations and revisions.

  • Provide support in various benefit projects and administration, such as upgrading systems and functionality testing, as requested.

  • Coordinate and conduct benefit communications, including open enrollment presentations and training.

  • Act as a backup for the Employee Relations Administrator.

  • Participate in Human Resources and Labor Relationsprojects as needed.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business or a related field or equivalent experience required.

  • Minimum of 5 years of working experience in employee benefits and FMLA administration is required. HR work experience in a fast-paced environment is preferred.

  • HRIS system experience, including understanding of HRIS functionality, data entry and system audits is required.

  • Must have knowledge of federal and state laws governing benefits including, but not limited to, ACA, HIPAA, COBRA, FMLA, ADA, other state leave laws, etc.

  • Experience in benefit programs, policies and practices, including interpretation and compliance.

  • Thorough knowledge of labor relations and contract negotiations, employee relations and communications, employment laws and regulations.

  • Organizational Skills – must have the ability to plan and coordinate multiple tasks with a variety of employees, departments and vendors with regular interruptions. Must be able to set goals and develop strategies & schedules to accomplish goals.

  • People Skills – must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to motivate, empower and delegate. Must be willing to promote Cliffs team concepts and company policies fairly and consistently. Must be skilled in team solving techniques.

  • Computer Skills –Computer proficiency including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Hands on experience with HRIS systems and third party benefit systems. Must have the ability to learn and be proficient with other related programs and systems.

  • Communication Skills - must have excellent communication skills and be able to interact and communicate with all levels of the organization. Must have strong written and verbal communication skills. Must be willing to challenge the status quo, identify and pursue new ideas and opportunities to improve production, safety, add value, and/or solve problems.

  • Decision Making Skills – must have strong decision making skills, including recognition of when to escalate issues. Must be able to think logically using factual data and structure ideas to influence others. Must make sound, timely decisions under conditions of uncertainty and risk. Must be able to multi-task and work well under stressful conditions.

  • Strong work ethic – has a self-starting nature and conscientious and diligent work ethic, a demonstrated flexibility and integrity and a collaborative style with the objective of building strong relationships with diverse customer groups.

  • Demonstrates empathy for personal circumstances, while remaining objective.

  • Must be capable of working effectively and safely using a participative, positive management style in a team environment.

  • Attention to detail producing high quality work is critical.

  • Ability to work independently, organize and prioritize work.

  • High level of confidentiality is required.

  • Must be able to meet deadlines.

  • Must be a champion of safe production methods & ideals. Promotes continuous improvement.

  • Highly motivated, demonstrated positive attitude and excellent work ethic.
