Position Title:Ore Control Geologist

Position Location:Hibbing, MN

Reporting Relationship:Reports to the Section Manager Mine Engineering

Travel:Limited travel domestically; may require overnight stay.

Company Overview:

Hibbing Taconite is a leading iron ore mining company which began production in 1976 and has an annual plant capacity of 8.0 million tons of iron ore. ArcelorMittal, US Steel and Cleveland-Cliffs are partners in Hibbing Taconite, with ArcelorMittal owning a majority stake.

Cliffs Mining Company is the current manager of Hibbing Taconite joint venture. In August 2019, ArcelorMittal USA will assume the role of manager and at that time Hibbing Taconite employees will join the ArcelorMittal USA Team under ArcelorMittal Hibbing Management LLC.


Position Summary:

The Ore Control Geologist willmanage, coordinate and implement functions related to the geology of the mine including diamond drilling, bench design, ore grading, geological mapping and crude ore sampling.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Develop and coordinate annual development and exploration diamond drilling programs, including:
    • Preparation of maps, specifications, and budgets
    • On-site supervision of contracted drilling crews
    • Core logging, core photography, geotechnical analysis, assay sampling in accordance with Cliffs QA/QC protocol
  • Work with mine planners to develop mine bench designs and related datasets for use in all stages of mine planning.
  • Develop geological and geophysical maps based on field observations and surveys.
  • Oversight of bench ore grading including statistical analysis of source data, and the development of ore grading locations.
  • Provide predicted daily grading schedules for ore blending to Mining Dispatch and Operations that support the mine plan and meet the concentrator’s requirements.
  • Serve as technical representative of the mine in production reconciliation dialogue, responsible for explanation of ore blends on plant metallurgical and production results (geometallurgy).
  • Participate in short-range mine planning by providing geological information.
  • Utilize GIS and 3D Mine Planning software packages (e.g. ESRI, Vulcan, acQuire) for input and output of geological data and reporting.
  • Support business improvement initiatives that reduce mine costs while considering safety, environment, quality and productivity.
  • Conduct routine safety inspections of pit walls.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties related to blast monitoring, continuous improvement projects and special geology sampling programs.


The ideal candidate will have the following education, work experience, and abilities:

Education- - B.S. in geology, Earth Science or equivalent.

Experience & Knowledge- - Minimum of 1-3 years progressive experience in mining operations; supervisory experience desirable. Knowledge of theBiwabik Iron Formation preferred.

Technology Skills- - ESRI, Vulcan or other Mine Planning Software packages. Must be proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, with experience in Access a plus.

Communication Skills- - Strong verbal, organizational and written communication. The ability to build relationships.

Strong Work Ethic- - Must have a self-starting nature and conscientious and diligent work ethic, a demonstrated flexibility and integrity, and collaborative style with the objective of building strong relationships with internal customers and external vendors and regulatory partners.

Operational Focus- - Possesses a demonstrated bottom line focus and passion for creating strong processes that fully integrate and align the goals of the business.
