Site Overview:

Hibbing Taconite Company (HTC) is located in the center of Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range near the cities of Hibbing and Chisholm. HTC is owned by Mittal Steel (62.3%), U.S. Steel (14.7%) and Cliffs Mining Company (23%). Cliffs Mining Company is also the managing agent. Plant capacity is rated at 8.0 million tons of iron ore pellets annually.

Position Summary:

Lead day to day activities of Mine Engineering and Geology groups.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Develop budgets and performance target measures for the mining department
  • Direct and coordinate the execution of projects and plans, and achieve the desired results in safety, quality, and cost
  • Monitor key performance indicators on a continuous basis to improve process efficiency, product quality, and cost effectiveness.
  • Promote a culture of performance. Effectively utilize KPIs, Performance Efficiency Reviews, financial statements, and operational reports to track performance, establish effective action plans, and continuously improve the operations.
  • Ensure processes are in place to provide a quality product to the plant. Utilize best practices in extraction, processing, stockpiling, and re-handling to ensure product remains within target specifications. Utilize available reports effectively to measure quality, identify variances, and establish corrective action.
  • Supervise the calculation and re-calculation of haul distances and partner with Mine Operations to ensure the appropriate equipment is being used efficiently to meet production goals.
  • Research and recommend technology to reduce costs, and increase efficiency and accuracy of all mine planning functions.
  • Oversee weekly, monthly, annual, and life of mine planning efforts
  • Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual royalty reporting
  • Oversee tailing basin planning and construction efforts
  • Oversee compliance to terms set forth in mining lease agreements and license agreements

Qualifications:

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mine Engineering, Geology, Metallurgy, or similar.
  • P.E. preferred

Experience

  • 5-10years Mine Engineering experience preferred
  • Thorough understanding of mining theories, principles, procedures, systems, and techniques.
  • Proven success leading teams and developing effective internal and external relations.

Technical Skills

  • Proficient computer skills and familiarity with mine planning software packages including; Vulcan or similar planning software.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Demonstrated proficiency using ArcGIS Desktop or ArcGIS Pro software

Communication Skills:

  • Must be skilled in communicating to various groups of individuals throughout the organization, with the ability to communicate technical terms and ideas to non-technical individuals.
