Description


The Category Manager will be the company’s subject matter expert regarding assigned categories and associated services, such as grinding media, bulk materials, plant and mobile equipment, MRO, and contract services. The position is responsible for managing the end-to-end sourcing process; including strategy creation and implementation, supplier identification and qualification, contract negotiation and implementation, and supplier relationship management. Focus is on understanding and mitigating risk profiles, security of supply, and economic factors.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Execute organization-wide commodity strategies that deliver cost effective solutions as measured by total cost of ownership and cost per ton impact.

  • Develop a thorough understanding of commodity dynamics, market structures, supply constraints, competitive forces, and cost drivers of assigned categories.

  • Identify and recommend sourcing opportunities and qualify alternate supply sources.

  • Communicate sourcing recommendations and implementation activities with internal stakeholders; clearly identifying financial impact, operational risks and benefits, and required support / ownership actions.

  • Negotiate and implement supply agreements; serve as the supply chain liaison with the legal and risk management functions to ensure appropriate legal and commercial language is approved and included in all contractual documents.

  • Provide budget inputs and monitor material cost impact compared to budget.

  • Manage strategic vendor relationships; drive accountability through clear expectation setting, performance metric reporting, and contract management initiatives.

  • Follow existing, or develop new, procedures to ensure compliance with company and regulatory directives, as well as sound contract management practices.

  • Support the supplier audit process and manage the implementation of any required changes.

Required Skills

  • Ability to engage and lead cross-functional teams and see project through to completion both in a team setting and independently.

  • Demonstrated analytical aptitude, strong communication and negotiation skills (verbal and written), and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work in an ambiguous environment and communicate across multiple business units to achieve set goals

  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage change

Education Requirements:

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, or Business.

  • Preferred: Master’s Degree in, or MBA with concentration in, Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, or Business.

  • Preferred certifications: CSCP, CPIM, CPSM

Experience Needed:

  • 5 to 10 years progressive professional experience in supply chain management, sourcing, procurement, or operations management.

  • Mining, steel, or other heavy industry experience strongly preferred.

  • Operational/Industry/Supplier knowledge preferred.

Travel:

  • Domestic and international, as required

  • From Cleveland-based headquarters to Michigan / Minnesota-based operational sites, as required.
